No, this rounding of *e does not take place after a dental stop. The
paradigm of <tona:re, tonui:, tonitus> is a suppletive mixture of first-
and fourth-conjugation forms. I suppose the present stem (3sg. <tonat>
etc.) is denominative (an *-ah2-je/o- derivative of *(s)tonh2o-), while
the other forms clearly reflect the PIE o-grade iterative
*(s)tonh2-éje/o- (cf. Skt. stanáyati, Germanic stanjan-), with the
deverbal adjective *(s)tonh3-i-tó-.
