Andrew Sihler is fond of the idea that Latin tendere
and -fendere (defendere, offendere) reflect IE *tnje-
and *gwhnje- and are therefore correspondent to Greek
teinô and theinô.
He has *tenye- and *gWHenye- in his "New
Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin".
Since Greek palatalizes various consonants before y
and later depalatalizes most of them (dialectical
variation) a similar solution works for Latin.
