Lass mentions a few examples in which the /r/ has been attached to
the root: OE <sigor> 'victory' (ON <sigr>, Goth <sigis>); OE <éar>
'ear of grain', ONthumb <æhher>, OS/OHG <ahar> (ON <ax>, Goth <ahs>;
cf. Lat <acus> 'awn, bristle, gen.sing. <aceris>).
