Well that's my vowel too, in fact.

Even in that case though, the j-element manifests as a palatal
fricative, does it not? So you should have in any case a co-
ordinate velar-palatal fricative, if not the simple palatal
fricative described by Richard.

I always assumed that I was using a simple palatal fricative for
/hj/ too, but now I'm not so sure that I don't really pronounce
it as you do.

Does anybody know of any other occurences of /hj/ in English for
us to experiment with?
