Oh I just had a horrible thought, considering my previous
misanalyses of English: [jUw] doesn't constitute a unit
(triphthong?) for the purposes of English as [Uw], [ej],
and [ow] do, does it, considering how it's written as a
single vowel and all?
And if I can get anybody to answer that, then what too of
[aj]? Is that a sequence of /a/ + /j/, or is it a single
diphthongal phoneme?
I assume that whatever [aj] is, [aw] is the same?
David
P.S. What about [ar] and [&r]?
