It is preserved outside that phrase.
Skt does also show independent dan (sic) for the genitive, presumably from
*dams. e.g. patir dan (=dampatis) and s'is'ur-dan (child of the house).
The final s is lost regularly, and the final -m is changed to -n as in a few
other words.
