Erh, let me rephrase. Not a "hypothetical" statement. Duh!
I mean to see a "non-existent" statement. I guess I'm equating
the indicative as a positive mood. So if this were so, the negative
would obviously not fall under this because it doesn't indicate a
presence of an action but the absence of it. "I did not go"
would be a statement that the action doesn't exist (and
that's why I hastily and mistakenly typed "hypothetical").

I guess come to think of it, maybe it _is_ *ne esti and maybe
you CAN have a negative marked with the indicative. Aggravatingly,
I can't find any direct text on the internet that says anything
about conjugation in the "negative indicative" mood. Perhaps
I've been confusing the injunctive with the plain negative
as Miguel says.
