I doubt if we can propose a pre-metathesis loan from Romanian into _all_
of Slavic (see below). Besides, that doesn't explain the origin of
<gard> in Romanian. It might well be a loan from Germanic into
Proto-Romanian, but in that case it's much more likely that Proto-Slavic
borrowed the word independently.

True, but for obvious historical reasons their distribution is usually
limited to South Slavic (or even to Serbo-Croatian). Some of them spread
as far north as southern Poland and Ukraine (with the help of
Daco-Romanian settlers), but not a single one of them has become
pan-Slavic, as far as I can see.
