Just a note: I don't think it's Schwebeablaut as originally conceived.
PIE may have been a little Germanic-like in its treatment of roots
containing *r. In cases like *ters- ~ *tres-, *perk^- ~ *prek^- or the
pair above we may be dealing with sporadic rhotic metathesis, just like
OE beorht ~ briht.
