It's a Romance word (*troppa-, *troppu- 'flock, group') of obscure origin.
Perhaps from Germanic (if related to *trep-jan- 'tread lightly, skip' > Eng.
trip; there are ablaut-related Germanic nouns containing *trap-, and a
connection between 'walking' and 'flock, sheep' is frequent
cross-linguistically).
