I've been too hasty. PGmc. *ardaz (> OE eard) may mean 'country, native land' (cf. also OS ard 'dwelling'). It isn't attested in Wulfilan Gothic as a common noun, but the names above make excellent sense as 'land-child' and 'land-ruler'. It follows that Goth. *Ardagasts < *arda-gastiz must be admitted as a real possibility.
