My personal guess (pace Pokorny's improbable conections) is that it may be a derivative of *g^Heh1- 'go forth, spring forward, go out, leave' (Skt. ha:-, Gmc. *ge:-, etc.). The Slavic word for 'hare' (*zaje~cI < *zajinko- < *g^Hoh1-h1n.-ko- 'leaper') might be related, so perhaps the adprep *g^Ho: was originally a case form of an action noun meaning something like 'leap forward'.
