Re: [tied] Japanese as a creole language?

Hi, Ned:

I was under the impression that opinions are still divided as to whether Altaic itself is an actual language family.  Does anyone know whether that issue has been resolved?

By the way, I need to apologize for my "crack" comment.  It was quite inappropriate.

since Altaic is one of the language families that is supposed to be
related to Indo-European, and since Japanese, according to some
scholars, is a member of the Altaic family, that someone on this list
would have been interested in the claims presented on the web-site
that I listed.  Could someone, please, at least tell me whether it's
a viable theory or whether the person who wrote it is smoking a
really low-grade brand of crack.

Hi Andy,

As far as appropriateness, I feel that can be left up to the
moderator, but I just wanted to comment on your statement that Altaic
is "supposed to be related to Indo-European". That is true under both
the Nostratic and the Eurasiatic hypotheses, but I think we should
keep in mind that the majority of linguists do not subscribe to
either. I'm certainly not objecting to discussions based on either
hypothesis- I enjoy reading them- but I do think we should avoid
giving the impression that either is an established consensus.
