Gerry,

Who has proposed including either Austronesian, Austro-Asiatic, or
Austric in Nostratic? (Others' messages have already explained the
distinctions between those three groups) It is true that some
researchers have suggested connections between Austronesian on the
one hand, and Ainu and/or Japanese on the other. It is also true that
other researchers have included Japanese in Nostratic because they
believe it is connected to Altaic; and also true that Joseph
Greenberg included Ainu in his Eurasiatic proposal. But it is my
understanding that these are "either-or" situations: if Japanese or
Ainu are genetically connected to Austronesian then they are not part
of Altaic, Nostratic or Eurasiatic...if they are part of Altaic,
Nostratic or Eurasiatic, then they cannot be genetically close to
Austronesian.

Has someone put forth a proposal which now does include Austronesian
in Nostratic, and if so, on what basis?

Ned
