[Moeller]: i think you are wrong here george. The therm Ardeal-Erdely is not
at all a magyar one. Teh ardeal is the actualy romanian therm the Erdely is
the magyar form. Teh root it seems to have celtic origins and it is called
Ardal or Ardel. Most probably the magyar got the term from your second therm
in question , from the vlachs.
IMO , the vlachs appears as therm with the slavic migration. Until these one
we do not have a such therm.
Even last 2 centueries before today, the slavs called the vlachs
aproximately similar with the italians. Piotr is a polonian so he must be
able to know there is a very small difference
among wlosz for italian and wlasz for romanians ( i hope i do not make too
big mistakes here.I just ask Piotr to correct me with the right terms.)
So , all this tupsy-turvy we have to put on the heck of the slavs.
For them, the langauge spoken by the people they found in their migration in
the direction of roman empire in North of Danu was kinda roman, latin.
Belive me, for a dutch man or a german one, the romanian language is almost
the same as italian language when you hear it. Even for a slav or latin
speaker, the german language is hard to diffrenece from dutch language or
from danish. A confusion between them is very easy to do, because it just
sound very similar in your eears.Of course you will learn the difference,
but you will keep them in mind as very appropiate and your therms for these
languages will be in a way similar.
It is dispputed if the slavs got the therm from germanic speaking poeple
"walach" or "woloch" or if they invented this name.
But fact is, the name appear just with the slav migration . So, they must be
the point who helped this therm to become so well known.
So far I know, the people north of donau never called themselfs valch,
blach, wallachians or so.
