EIEC has an article, "Dereivka" which mentions the controversy. The
horse in question is said to date from "c. 2900, too recent for easy
assignment with the other Dereivka dates but too old for those who
regard it as a very late deposition of the Bronze Age." (p. 177)

Everything of recent date which I've read tends to discount this
horse, and its value for dating domestication.

We are still a long way from firmly establishing a date for horse
domestication, tho' I think somewhere around 3000 BCE is not
unreasonable. Riding a horse bareback, with just a primitive bridle is
enough to completely revolutionize the management of free-range stock
on the steppe (it in fact permits free-ranging stock).
