*****GK: Could you direct me to a source describing
what exactly was done in the matter of this redating?
I'd appreciate this very much. Telegin's classic work
on Dereivka (and Serednyj Stih/Sredny Stog
generally)notes that the "ritual" burying of his
horse's head (plus a hoof and other bones) was ABOVE
the equally "ritual" burial of a dog, and NEXT to
another such canine burial (p. 45). Were these dog
remains also analyzed and dated? But apart from this,
we know that: (1)Dereivka is definitely a "horse"
settlement in terms of the animal bone remains [of
3232 bone parts and splinters discovered there about
74% are of the horse (Telegin, p. 133)]; (2) Only one
horse bit was found close to the ritual burial, and
the other five were located in the southwest (p. 37),
north(p. 43) and northnortheast (p. 43) area of the
settlement; (3)the entire material culture is
definitely very ancient (no iron age objects there at
all).== So even a redating of the horse head (assuming
this was done properly and accurately)would not alter
things very much in terms of the site's
significance.== Telegin still used uncalibrated RC
dates for his time line, but noted (p. 118) that
dendrochronological adjustments might deepen his
estimate by some 800 years.[to ca. 4250 BC].******
