I've already pointed my idea that PIE theogony
perhaps included a first generation of old gods, a kind of Council of
Ancients.
The godly families in IE myths usually have a
composition like this: a "main"god, his children and his brothers and
sisters.
My idea is that the "Family" was the Deiwo:s
(Aesir-like), children of the Sky-Father. But who were the "Uncles" of the
Deiwo:s?
Let's try...
I picked pairs of gods based upon Nordic pairs and
try to compare them.
1) HOENIR and MI:MR.
They participated of Aesir-Vanir War. Hoenir "the
faster god" and Mimr, who have his head severed, but mystically kept
alive.
Severed heads were present at Bran, Daksha, Ganesha
and Orpheus legends.
I compare the faster Hoenir with Savitr, the god of
Moviment and Growing.
So, HOENIR-SAVITR & MIMR-DAKSHA.
Daksha was decapitated by Shiva, and he had many
daughters to become wives of the Gods.
2) ODINN and MI:MR
Mimr also head other aspect, and maybe he mix two
archaic gods; The Child of Waters. He had a Well, he ask for the eye of Odinn.
Odinn absorbed the Dyeu- functions of Germanic *Tiuz. So, this pair
is
*DYEU- P@... (Odinn-Dyau) and *AP-NEPO:T
(Mimir-Apam Napat).
Apam Napat also have elements in Sea Giant Aegir, a
shiny entity living underwater. I think Dyeu- married two daughters of
Mimr-Daksha, *Dyu:ni:- and *Da:nu-, and begot the Deiwo:s and the Giants,
respectively. Maybe he had more wives, to procreate other kinds of
creatures.
3) BRHASPATI and SHUKRA
Brhaspati, "the Priest of Devas", and Shukra
or Kavi Ushanas, the "Priest of Asuras". Two Priest-Gods who help with his
powers the Gods and the Giants, respectively.
Shukra, master of illusion, remembers the artisan
of the Asuras, Ma:ya, and is alike Utgardloki, The Illusionist Giant that
defeated Thorr. Maybe we can consider Utgardloki as a "doublet" of Loki, who
appeared as Odin's brother or as a Fire Giant's son. But, what's the
Nordic equivalent of Brhaspati? Bragi, as a singer? (Brhaspati has the voice as
his main power)
4) HOW MANY ARE THEM?
What's the number of Ancients? 7 as Rshis and
Prajapatis? 6 as Titans? 6 as Kronos's children? I don't have a solid
idea.
