Metafont fonts are used only with one application, TeX, and TeX is niche
product. The outline font formats that the type industry deals with most
of the time are Postscript or Truetype, and certainly the vast majority
of computer users ever only see fonts of one of these two formats. So,
the article in question dealt with the two outline font formats that are
of primary interest to the intended audience.
