Michael, also remember that KHOF (=kaf + rafeh) is
also a Yiddish name. The semiconsonants' Yiddish
names are VOV and YUD. KHOF has the same guttural
sound as KHET in Yiddish�KHOF (with the rafeh) is
mostly used, while KHET is used in items from Hebrew.
Also, VOV and YUD stand for vowels in Yiddish�those
are doubled (written double) to stand for the
consonants. The s(h)ibilants in Yiddish are written
as follows:
/s/ � SAMEKH
/z/ � ZAYIN
/ts/ � TSADDI(Q)
/dz/ � DALET + ZAYIN
/sh/ � SHIN (without any dots)
/zh/ � ZAYIN + SHIN
/ch/ (spelled as TSH in YIVO) � TET + SHIN
/j/ (spelled as DZH in YIVO) � DALET + ZAYIN + SHIN
