This is an English translation of approximately one third of the Yamaka, the sixth book of the Abhidhamma Piṭaka, and is intended as the first of a planned three-volume translation of the whole work. The translation has been prepared by Charles Shaw in collaboration with the late Lance Cousins, who has provided a translation of the relevant portion of the ancient commentary, the Pañcappakaraṇa-aṭṭhakathā, which is included in this volume. The publication of the first volume of The Book of Pairs is significant in that the Yamaka is one of three works of the Pali canon of which no English translation is readily available. The volume is published in memory of Lance Cousins, who through his scholarship and teaching promoted the study and understanding of the Abhidhamma.
