Dear Jim,

Thanks so much for your useful & interesting information.  As I know until now, in Vietnam there are not so much people knowing about Kaccayana or Pali traditional grammar in general.

The Theravada was transmitted to Vietnam in 1930s and until now, we still not have a Vietnamese Tipitaka completely.  Before the last 10 years, we just have had about 80% of the Suttas, 0% of Vinaya which was translated from Pali to Vietnamese and a little bit of commentaries and sub-commentaries but with low-quality.  We also have the Abhidhamma but it was translated from the Thai version.  During about last 10 years, we have Ven Indacanda who have been re-translating the old Suttas, translating the new Suttas, he has translated all the Vinaya too.  All those he has been doing with the method of literal translation.  I also considered him as my Pali teacher.

More recently, we have another Ven who is translating Pali Nissaya from Burmese to Vietnamese.  So, if someone goes on to apply the traditional grammar for translating the Vienamese Tipitaka.  It would be another contribution for us.

Dear Huynh Trong Khanh,

I tried contacting Sayadaw A.Thitzana again and got a very good response
this time. He will be sending me a copy of the new Kaccāyana volumes as soon
as he receives his free author's copies. I will be happy to review and share
what's in the books with you and the group although that won't happen until
later.

U Thitzana is now 65 and still very active with Pali and Buddhist research
projects. I also learn that he is based in Charlotte, Missouri, USA. He
frequently travels to Asia. By the way, he has strong ties to the Vietnamese
community in the Montreal area, staying and teaching at a Vietnamese
meditation centre in Laval just outside of Montreal. I've long considered
him to be my Pali teacher as he is the one who introduced me to Kaccāyana in
the late 80s by sending me Kaccāyana and Padarūpasiddhi grammars in Burmese
script, also the wonderful Abhidhānappadīpikā dictionary.

Thanks so much for your advice. As you said the Indian traditional grammar
is different from the western one, so I think from the perspective of the
traditional grammar, we could have another translating-style for the same
Pali original paragraph. It is just my subjective view and I am very eager
to discover this approach. Cause I am not able to get the book right now, so
if someone has it, I will be very happy to hear him share somethings about
the book's content.
