Dear Kåre,

Thanks for your input and for sharing your experience with stone. Instead of
a hammer and chisel I am thinking of a drill, drill bits, and files but
first I'll have to try these out. Of the two books I acquired in the 60s on
lettering, I found that one of them has an 18 page chapter entitled
"Inscriptions in Stone" by A.E.R Gill which is added as an appendix to
Edward Johnston's Writing & Illuminting, & Lettering. London: Pitman & Sons,
1962 (reprint). I'm only just starting to read the chapter which looks
interesting and has a section on material and tools. Besides Romanized Pali,
I'm also interested in experimenting with Asian scripts used on stone and
will give consideration to the Brahmi script.

Best,
Jim

My only experience with this happened many years ago, when I led a group
of school children in a project to create some copies of Norwegian rock
art from the stone age and bronze age. We drew a few motives on a rock
with pieces of chalk, and started to work with hammer and chisel. I
found that it took much more work and longer time than we had thought,
and the chisels needed frequent resharping. So in addition to a suitable
stone, you need time, patience and good tools. You should also pick a
script suited for stone. Maybe Brahmi would be the best choice?

Yours,
Kåre
