Thank you Bhante. Actually performing a search made me realize just how many occurrences of vh there are in Pali; jivhā, for example. It's still surprising that bahu becomes bavha, but such is language, I guess.

Dear Ven. Yuttadhammo,

The verse also occurs in the Jatakas with the more familiar reading. It is
11. Ekādasakanipāto, v. 50, Ja IV 99 of the VRI edition, with the gloss as highlighted below between asterisks.

50.

‘‘Vācaṃ manañca paṇidhāya sammā, kāyena pāpāni akubbamāno;

Bahunnapānaṃ gharamāvasanto, saddho mudū saṃvibhāgī vadaññū;

Saṅgāhako sakhilo saṇhavāco, etthaṭṭhito paralokaṃ na bhāye’’ti.

Tassattho – bhadde, udaye vācaṃ manañca sammā ṭhapetvā kāyena pāpāni akaronto ime dasa kusalakammapathe samādāya vattanto *bahuannapāne pahūtadeyyadhamme ghare vasanto* ‘‘dānassa vipāko atthī’’ti saddhāya samannāgato muducitto dānasaṃvibhāgatāya saṃvibhāgī pabbajitā bhikkhāya caramānā vadanti nāma, tesaṃ paccayadānena tassa vādassa jānanato vadaññū catūhi saṅgahavatthūhi saṅgahatāya saṅgāhako piyavāditāya sakhilo maṭṭhavacanatāya saṇhavāco ettha ettake guṇarāsimhi ṭhito paralokaṃ gacchanto na bhāyatīti.

Nettipparakarana VRI 159 has the verse with the same reading as in the Samyutta Nikaya.

Dear Friends,

I just came across the following passage in the CST:

“kiṃsūdha bhītā janatā anekā,
maggo canekāyatanappavutto.
pucchāmi taṃ gotama bhūripañña,
kismiṃ ṭhito paralokaṃ na bhāye”ti.
“vācaṃ manañca paṇidhāya sammā,
kāyena pāpāni akubbamāno.
bavhannapānaṃ gharamāvasanto,
saddho mudū saṃvibhāgī vadaññū.
etesu dhammesu ṭhito catūsu,
dhamme ṭhito paralokaṃ na bhāye”ti.

The offending word is bavhannapānaṃ. This is pretty obviously a typo, and it's not just with the Roman. The Devanagari version has it too: बव्हन्‍नपानं

The Thai version has bahunnapānaṃ, which I guess is what is in the original Myanmar as well? Does anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks,

Yuttadhammo
