Dear Jim,
Both Petra and I are currently working on articles wholly or partly
concerned with the disciples of Sāriputta of Poḷonnaruva; so probably
neither of us will want to say too much about that yet.
However, I take Mahābhidhāna as others have done in the past i.e. as a
descriptive epithet: 'with the name Mahā'. In other words Mahābhidhāna
is a poetic way of expressing Mahānāma. Otherwise one could take it as
meaning 'having a famous name'. His name would then most probably be
Upatissa or Sāriputta or perhaps Moggallāna.
