Dear Petra,
Thanks for the quick response and quote from Sp-ṭ. I'm delighted to see that
Paṭis-gp is older than Vācissara's ṭīkā. I found a Mahābhidhāna (only once
in CST4) near the end of Paṭis-a, presumably the same one mentioned in
Paṭis-gp.
Here's the Paṭis-a verse:
Therenettha nivasatā, samāpitāyaṃ mahābhidhānena;
Tatiye vasse cutito, moggallānassa bhūpatino.
So, he completed something in the third year after the death of Moggallāna.
I figured out that the upāsako in the Paṭis-gp verse is the one who made the
request (tena satīmatā being the correlative of yo upāsako possibly named
Dvicakkhu. In verse 3 I have trouble with vuttassa so sāvakamuttamena. Is it
sāvakam (acc.) uttamena or sāvaka-m-uttamena?
Best,
Jim

Dear Jim,
for tonight, the Paṭis-gp is not by Vācissara, but it is earlier than
Sāriputta of Poḷonnaruva who quotes the Paṭis-gp available in the Thai
edition mentioned by you as well as in a Sinhalese and a Burmese edition.
Sāriputta (Sp-ṭ Be I 104,19-21 quotes the following sentence from the
Paṭis-gp):
tattha Paṭisambhidāgaṇṭhipade tāva idaṃ vuttaṃ: „sayaṃ
vuttadhammakkhandhānaṃ bhikkhuto gahite yeva saṅgahetvā evam āhā ti
daṭṭhabbaṃ.“ (Paṭis-gp Ce p. 23).
Best,
Petra
