Dear Ven. Bodhi (and Lance),

Thank you for your explanation of byāpitāya which now makes sense to me. I
do not find vyāpitā in MW's online dictionary but do find vyāpitva (n.)
listed as follows which would have the same meaning as the fem. form:

vyApitva n. the state of pervading , pervasion , extensiveness ,
extent , universality , extension to (ifc.) , A1vS3r. MBh. Veda7ntas.

I assume both the fem. and neut. forms are derived from the adj. vyāpin.
Apparently MW lists the form I was thinking of:

vyApita mfn. (fr. Caus.) filled up , filled Pan5cat

I'd like to add that I received your new translation of the Anguttara Nikaya
from the PTS a few weeks ago. It's really quite a beautiful book and nice to
have it all in one volume instead of five. I'll be spending a lot of time
studying and reading it along with the Pali original.

Byāpitāya (or vyāpitāya, in Ee of the Dīgha-Ṭīkā) is not a past participle.
It is the instrumental of the abstract feminine noun vyāpitā. See
Monier-Williams’ SED, p. 1037, middle column, vyāpi which lists the other
abstract noun form, the neuter vyāpitva.



Thus, coming back to our sentence:

... savisayabyāpitāya mahākaruṇābhāvaṃ upagatā karuṇāva bhagavato atisayena
hadayasītalabhāvahetūti āha ‘‘karuṇāsītalahadayan”ti



It is just compassion, which by the pervasion of its proper sphere has
reached the state of great compassion, that is pre-eminently the cause for
the Blessed One’s coolness of heart. Thus he says: “[whose] heart is cooled
by compassion.”
