[Kaccāyanabyākaraṇaṃ, Sandhikappa, Catutthakaṇḍa, Sutta 32]

32. 50. E-he ñaṃ (140).

Ekāra-hakāre pare niggahitaṃ kho ñakāraṃ pappoti vā.

When the letters ‘e’ and ‘h’ follow, the niggahita optionally becomes
‘ñ’.

Paccattaññeva parinibbāyissāmi (M. i, 318), taññev' ettha
paṭipucchissāmi (D. i, 57), evañhi vo bhikkhave sikkhitabbaṃ (M. i,
171). Tañhi tassa musā hoti (Khu. i, 396).

Examples:
paccattaññeva: paccattaṃ eva (10); paccattañ eva (32); paccattaññ eva
     (28); paccattaññeva (11).
taññeva: taṃ eva (10); tañ eva (32); taññ eva (28); taññeva (11).
evañhi: evaṃ hi (10); evañ hi (32); evañhi (11).
tañhi: taṃ hi (10); tañ hi (32); tañhi (11).

Vā ti kasmā? Evam etaṃ abhiññāya (Khu. i, 447), evaṃ hoti subhāsitaṃ.

Why say ‘optionally’? To prevent the operation of this rule in the
following: Evam etaṃ abhiññāya, evaṃ hoti subhāsitaṃ.
* The particle ‘vā’ in this sutta is used as a fixed alternative
(vavatthitavibhāsā). The change of ‘ṃ’ to ‘ñ’ applies only when it is
followed by ‘eva’ and ‘hi’.

Counter Examples:
evam etaṃ: evaṃ etaṃ. Here the ‘ṃ’ of evaṃ is not followed by ‘eva’.
evaṃ hoti. Here the ‘ṃ’ is not followed by ‘hi’.
