Dear Noah,

passambhaya.m is the present participle, nom. sing. of the causative form of the
verb passambhati (to calm down or quiet). The caus. form would be passambhayati
and the form in question is passambhaya.m or passambhayanto (nom. sing. masc.).
See Geiger sections 97 and 190.

So in the famous passage from the Mahaasatipa.t.thaanasutta:

`passambhaya.m kaayasa"nkhaara.m assasissaamii'ti sikkhati, `passambhaya.m
kaayasa"nkhaara.m passasissaamii'ti sikkhati.

He trains himself, "I will breathe in calming (causing them to be calm) the
formations of the body"; he trains himself "I will breath out, calming the
formations of the body".
