The World Tipitaka group apparently compared the whole of the VRI CD with the first printed edition of the sixth council and found over 40,000 differences. Personally, I’ve found some minor differences between the printed sixth council text and the VRI CD and in each instance the VRI CD text seemed to be a typo. Of course, despite this, the VRI CD is incredibly valuable for the study of Pali texts.

As I understand it, the World Tipitaka group claims that there are differences between the first printed edition of the sixth council and later reprints and that the first edition is superior. They claim that later reprints adopt readings which agree only with the Burmese readings (as opposed to reading presented by the Thai, Sri Lankan, etc. delegates). This may well be the case, however I’ve not seen any research on how great these differences are and whether the first edition is in fact more reliable and inclusive of other traditions. I don’t think the VRI CD is claimed to be pre-sixth council, rather it is perhaps based upon later reprints of the sixth council and contains some typos.

  that Goenka himself went to see their work and was shocked to find out
  that the version on his CD was still pre-6th council, and that the 6th
  council tipitaka never was distributed.  This group claims to have a new
  tipitaka based on the 6th council, but with revisions, if I remember
  correctly.  Sounds like a bit of a headache, all in all... it would be
  nice to know where the 6th council tipitaka is for certain...
