Yes, the Pāli seems quite clear. Perhaps Ananda was trying to coax the Buddha
out of his "perfumed hut" where he was ensconced for six years, as per the
commentary,

Ven. Nyanaponika has the following note in his SuttaNipata translation
(Sutta Nipata, p. 283 in the edition I have)
"Lt. K ist es der Buddha selber, der nun den von Ananda in der vorherigen
Sutte begonnenen Bericht fortsetzt."
==
"According to the Commentary it is the Buddha himself who now continues the
report which Ananda had started in the preceding sutta"
So, looks like Ven. Nyanaponika understood the Commy in the same way.
