Hello Khristos (and Bryan),

<< It's the last sentence in this quotation that I'm curious about:
"catutthaṃ jhānaṃ samāpannassa assāsapassāsā niruddhā honti." Am I to
understand, here, that in the fourth jhāna, inhalation and exhalation
cease?? >>

I think the solution to this problem, is to take the 4 arūpajjhānas as a
subset of the 4th jhāna and I imagine this would include nirodhasamāpatti.
Some years ago a related problem came up and when I started looking into it
I was surprised to read somewhere about the arūpajjhānas being included in
the 4th jhāna. The 4th jhāna is also the place from where one acquires the 6
supernormal knowledges (chaḷabiññas). I have since forgotten where I got
this information but I'm sure it's there somewhere, probably in the
commentaries.

Best, Jim
