[Kaccāyanabyākaraṇaṃ, Sandhikappo, Dutiyakaṇḍo, Sutta 12]

DUTIYA-KAṆḌA

12. 13. Sarā sare lopaṃ.

Sarā kho sare pare lopaṃ papponti.

Vowels come to elision because of a vowel.
* There is elision of vowels when they are followed by vowels.

Yass' indriyāni samathaṅ gatāni (Khu. i, 27, 358), no h' etaṃ bhante (Vin.
īi, 19), samet' āyasmā saṃghena (Vin. i, 265).

[U Nandisena's notes: (for 1 & 2, see postings for Kc 10 & 11)]
3. Yassindriyāni: In order to form this word, first the word must be written
down as 'yassa indriyāni'. Then by §10 the consonant (here conjunct
consonant) 'ss' is separated from the vowel 'a', and is put on the left
(yass a indriyāna); by §12 the 'a' is elided because of the following vowel
'i' (yass indriyāni); now the consonant 'ss' is carried to (combined with)
the following 'i' by §11. The word 'yassindriyāni' is finished.

4. No hetaṃ: Sequence: no hi etaṃ ; no h i etaṃ (10); no h etaṃ (12);
no hetaṃ (11).

5. Sametāyasmā: sametu āyasmā; samet u āyasmā (10); samet āyasmā (12);
sametāyasmā (11).

Notes (ja):
     1) This sutta is of the vidhisutta (prescriptive rule) type. According
to Mmd-nir (p. 173) a vidhisutta is further divided into eight kinds: lopa,
ādesa, dīgha, rassa, paccaya, vibhatti, and āgama. Kc 12, for example, is a
lopavidhisutta, to be more specific. All the suttas in the second kaṇḍa are
vidhi suttas. Interestingly, Mmd 21,20 calls them kārakasuttas.
     2) "sarā" = vowels. Mmd 21,9-17 addresses the question (codanā) of why
there is a plural "sarā" instead of a singular "saro" before the following
locative singular "sare". It is in the plural in order to include rare
cases where 2 or more vowels are elided together before a following vowel
such as in the case of Kc 113: sakhato gasse vā. (gasse = gassa e). The 'e'
here represents a dvanda compound which is resolved into "a ca ā ca i ca ī
ca e ca". The preceding four vowels: a ā i ī have been elided before the
last vowel 'e' to form the compound 'e'.
     3) Mmd 21,9-10 has the following:
etthaca sarāti kārino nidasseti || sareti nimittaṃ || lopanti kāriyaṃ ||
