[Kaccāyanabyākaraṇaṃ, Sandhikappo, Sutta 3]
3. 3. Tatth' odantā sarā aṭṭha.
Tattha akkharesu akārādīsu odantā aṭṭha akkharā sarā nāma honti.
Among those letters, the eight letters beginning with ‘a’ and ending with ‘o’
are called ‘vowels’.
Taṃ yathā? a ā i ī u ū e o. Iti sarā nāma.
Which are these? a ā i ī u ū e o. These are called ‘vowels’ (sarā).
Tena kvattho? Sarā sare lopaṃ.
What is the need of that (saying vowels)? Vowels because of a vowel (come
to) elision (see §12)..

Notes (by ja):
1) "Tatth' odantā sarā aṭṭha." = Among those (letters), the eight ending
in 'o' (are) the vowels.
2) "beginning with 'a' " properly belongs to "Among those letters"
(akkharesu akārādīsu) not "the eight letters". "akkharesu akārādīsu" is a
gloss on "tattha".
3) I would prefer "before a vowel" instead of "because of a vowel".
4) "(see §12)" refers to Kc 12.
5) I have interleaved the translated lines (formerly all together after
the whole Pali text) and removed the number (3) in round brackets at the end
of the sutta (first line).
