Re: Kaccaayana: introductory verses (2)

Here's what I would suggest, based on the Burmese translation in
Thapyekan Sayadaw's nissaya:
Budhā — The wise; labhanti — get/know; taṃ seyyaṃ — the best, ie, the
Nine Supramundane Dhammas; yaṃ — which; atthi — are; ettha — in  the
meaning of this excellent Pāḷi; jineritanayena — by means of the
method preached by the Buddha.  [They get/know] tañcāpi — that method
preached by the Buddha as well;  tassa vacanasubodhanena — by means of
the knowledge which knows well the meaning of the Buddha's Pāḷi;
atthañca — and the meaning of the Pāḷi too; amohabhāvā — by a
knowledge free of confusion;  akkharapadesu — regarding letters and
words.  Ato — Therefore [because the wise know the Supramundane
Dhammas in this way]; seyyatthiko — one who wants the Supramundane
Dhammas; suṇeyya — should learn, or should listen to; vividhaṃ — the
many-faceted; padaṃ=akkharapadaṃ — letter and word.

The wise get, or know, the 9 Supramundane Dhammas (path, fruition and
Nibbāna) which are in this excellent Pāḷi by means of the method
preached by the Buddha.  They gain that method as well by means of the
knowledge that can discern the meaning of the Buddha's Pāḷi
[atthanicchayañāna], and they gain/know the meaning of the Pāḷi too by
means of knowledge free of confusion regarding letters and words
[akkharakosallañāna].  Therefore, one who wants the Supramundane
Dhamma should learn the many-faceted letter and word.

I would like to correct one thing Jim mentioned in his very kind note
introducing me: we study Sandhi, Naama and Aakhyaata sections of
Kaccaayana during the first year of study here, among other things,
not a whole year only studying Sandhi.
