Thanks Jim,
What is this other list you mentioned that's discussing the Saddanīti? Can one join it?
Tks, Bryan

Hi Bryan,
Thanks for your interesting message. You raise many questions that I
can hardly even begin to try to respond to. If you research the Pali
corpus you will certainly find passages pertaining to the Pali
language. At Vbh-a 388, for example, there is reference to 18
languages (bhaasaa) and gives the first few that include Maagadhii and
even Greek (yonaka). Perhaps the complete list of 18 can be found
somewhere in the literaure? That would be interesting to see. Also, in
the last pariccheda of the Saddaniiti, there is something on
Maagadhii.
To your last paragraph regarding posting grammatical suttas with a
translation, I'm already doing that with the Saddaniiti on another
list. I'm working on the 25th pariccheda on verbs which I think
contains something like 241 suttas. I just posted a text, translation,
and notes on the 8th sutta (Sd 872) yesterday. I'm planning to start
something similar on Kaccaayana for this list but I'm afraid it may
be too much of a workload to keep up both on a regular basis. I will
see what I can do.
On verbs, Kacc has only 118 suttas. I noticed yeserday that Kacc has
only one sutta on the uses of the present tense while Sadd has eight
on the same. The extra ones seem to be mostly modelled on Pa.nini. So
things have gotten more sophisticated since Kaccaayana.
Btw, Ole has a new edition of Kaccaayana in the works and is now
finalising the introduction.
Best wishes,
Jim
