I thought I'd try posting small chunks from Mmd-pṭ with a translation
and comments (any feedback welcome). I'm starting at the beginning of
the comments on the word 'visuddhaṃ', pp. 3-4, which include the part
on the explanation of 'vāsanā' posted earlier. Mmd opens with two
introductory verses and the first pāda of the first is:
buddhaṃ visuddhamavisuddhajanassa suddhi- (p. 1)
The ṭīkā below is commenting on the second word in the verse. I will
present the author's comments on 'buddhaṃ' after I'm finished with
'visuddhaṃ'. Both these words are in the accusative case and the
objects of the absolute 'natvaa' (having bowed to) in pāda d of the
same verse.
visuddhanti bhagavā anaññasādhāraṇārahattamaggañāṇena savāsanānaṃ
samucchinnattā visesena kilesehi suddhoti visuddho ||
"visuddhaṃ" : the Bhagavā is the "visuddho" because he is purified
from the kilesas with distinction, from the fact of (the kilesas)
together with the vāsanās being completely cut off by (a special)
knowledge, not shared by others, of the arahattamagga.
Some comments:
1) uncertainty as to whether 'bhagavā' should be connected to 'suddho'
or 'visuddho'.
2) 'savāsanānaṃ': I think this has to be read: 'savāsanānaṃ kilesānaṃ'
or 'savāsanakilesānaṃ'.
3) 'visesena' (with distinction) gives a meaning to the prefix 'vi' in
'visuddho'.
(to be continued)
Sukhii hotu,
