If I remember correctly Thanbyin tika was mentioned in Myanmar dict preface section at least 30 years ago.

On Jan. 17, I asked Florent to ask U Nandamaalaabhiva. msa about the

availability in Myanmar of a .tiikaa on the Nyaasa. I had the

Sa.m-pya"n-. tiikaa in mind which is problably better known as the

Thanbyin.tiikaa. A short time later Florent met with U Nandamala and asked

about the .tiikaa. U Nandamala said that there were two such .tiikaas

available (in print) but extremely rare. One is the Thanbyin-.tiikaa (12th

cent.) and the other is the Nirutti-saara- mañjuusaa (17th cent.). Florent

offered to try to find the two for me. At that time I thought it highly

unlikely that I would ever live to see even one of them. Well, Florent found

and purchased a photocopy of a 1913 printed edition of the Thanbyin-.tiikaa

for me. He found it in a bookshop at the southern entrance of the Shwedagon

Pagoda. During the meantime U Nandamala's own printed original of this

version was brought back from Sagaing at the time of the recent conference

by Soe Yu Paing who had typed out on the computer the Nyaasa that I wanted .

This copy of the Thanbyin has since been completely photographed by Florent

and burned on a CD. This CD along with the photocopy purchased from the

bookshop were mailed out to me this past Friday from Bangkok and it should

be arriving in a couple of weeks. Florent has made accesible some of the

I think it is a good idea to transcribe the whole book into romanized

Pali (an etext) and make it freely available to anyone interested.

I have already started to do the work of typing and proofreading but it will

take quite a lot of time and effort to complete. Any help from volunteers

with this work would be most welcomed. Also, I think a pdf file of all the

images is desirable. I will also be contacting U Nandisena in Mexico this

coming week about a complete etext of the Nyaasa. He said he'd look for it

on his computer when he returned from Myanmar. I've already received half of

it from Yangon with the help of Florent. My goal is to eventually make

available a reliable etext of the Nyaasa and its two .tiikaas.



As to the Mmd-p.t text, fhe first 42 pages is on the first 6 pages of the

Nyaasa -- covering Vajirabuddhi' s two introductory verses and his commentary

on the two introductory verses of Kacc. The commentary on Kacc 1 doesn't

begin until page 43. So far, I have to say this printed 1913 edition has

been carefully edited as I have yet to find an obvious error. Some of the

letters have spots on them sometimes making it difficult to make out. My

experiences with the 1929 Burmese printed editon of the Nyaasa (which Num

sent me some years ago) has been helping me with my readings of a script

often lacking in spaces between the words or having spaces within a

compound, e.g., is it yutticintaaya. m (as in the text on p. 43) or yutti

cintaaya.m (2 words) ?



I'd like to hear from anyone who knows of any available edtions of the

Nyaasa and its .tiikaas printed outside of Myanmar. I know of part of the

Nyaasa that was printed in India in Devanagari.
