Ven/Kind Sirs and Ladies

Exercise 21 Pali to English

# 11. Pubbe Saavatthinagare manussaana.m satta ko.tiyo vasi.msu.

The locative of pubba would seem to be pubbamhi, or pubbasmi [not pubbe] because nagara is neuter and follows the declensions of “yo” [see text page 49], therefore maybe we have to change the above to:

Pubbamhi Saavatthinagare manussaana.m satta ko.tiyo vasi.msu.

Seventy million people lived in the eastern city of Savatthi.

Alternatively: Seventy million people lived in the former city of Savatthi.

Or we might change it to:

Puraa Saavatthinagare manussaana.m satta ko.tiyo vasi.msu.

Previously seventy million people lived in the city of Savatthi.

I have reworded and corrected some mistakes in this entry:

58. Some of these numerals take all the genders, and some have their own.

A. The stems eka, ti, catu are of all genders and declined differently in each gender.

B. The stem dvi and those from pa~nca to a.t.thaarasa do not show gender.

C. From ekuunaviisati to a.t.thanavuti the numbers are feminine. So is ko.ti.

D. Stems sata, sahassa and the compounds ending with them are neuter.

E. Eka (one) has only singular forms. The plural forms of it are used to express the meaning "some", e.g. eke manussaa = some people.

F. The stems from dvi to a.t.thaarasa have only the plural forms. From ekuunaviisati onwards are singular. But they take the plural form when it is required to show separate quantities, e.g. cattaari sataani = four (quantities) of hundred.

G. Numerals are more often used as adjectives.

Kind Regards
