Thank you so much.  I am grateful for your input -- as will be my Pali study group.  Your suggestion that the second sentence is open to the two translations confirms my suspicion that translation of the Tipitaka is not an easy task!

Both are correct. Btw, it would be good if you can provide Velthuis
encoding to Pali words and sentences.

Sentence 1 can also be translated as "The men sell mangoes to the
students' slaves."
