Yes, they are both grammatically possible, but the 2nd seems rather weird, don't you think so? While I do believe horses are fairly smart, to say that the horses would consciously do that for the farmer, whom they do not belong to, is a tad strange for me. :-)

Seriously, I've met with occasions in the texts where such ambiguity occur. In such cases, we have no choice but to make a judgement call. Usually it's not too difficult to decide based on the context.
