If you have linguistic abilities, I would highly recommend you "A New
Course in Reading Pali" by Gair and Karunatillake. It is based straight
on the suttas and does not teach any artificial constructs which one
would never meet in Pali Canon.

There are answers to exercises available at
http://www.geocities.com/paligroup/ , so you can use this book for
self-study.
