The syntactical problem of this sentence concerns the subject of
purakkhataa. I see no other possibility of explaining the verse than by
assuming that kaala.mgati.m and bhavaabhava.m are nom. pl., i.e., the
expected final ii of kaala.mgatii and similarly the aa of bhavaabhava.m were
nasalised, which is not at all uncommon in verses. On this assumption the
verse says: For those who are carried away on the flod of sensual pleasures,
not knowing sensual pleasures (acc.), repeated deaths and repeated
existences are waiting ahead;" perhaps a native speaker could a more elegant
way of putting it. Notice that vuu.lha is derived from Sanskrit uu.dha +
onglide /v/.

Ole Pind

Emne: [Pali] obscure verse

Dear friends,

Can anyone help me with the following difficult to translate verse
from the verses at the end of AN 5:55 (A iii 69)?

Tesa.m kaamoghavu.lhaana.m kaame aparijaanata.m,
Kaala.mgati.m bhavaabhava.m sa.msaarasmi.m purakkhataa.

Below is my stumbling effort at a word-by-word analysis:
tesa.m - those
kaamoghavu.lhaana.m - carried away on the flood of sensual pleasure
kaama – sensual pleasure
ogha - flood
vu.lhaana.m – carried away
kaame – sensual pleasures
aparijaanata.m – not fully understanding
kaala.m – black, dark
gati.m - destination
bhavaabhava.m - becoming and not-becoming ??
bhava - becoming
abhava.m - not-becoming
sa.msaarasmi.m – in sa.msaara
purakkhataa – honoured, preferred

I can't put the whole thing together though. All assistance greatly
appreciated.

With metta,
John
