Thanks a lot, again for your informative reply. I will try to get the Saddaniiti of PTS edition.

But there is still some confusion, please clarify it.

You says the pali root of jhaayati, to meditate, is jhaa, but Warder's grammar and Saddaniiti (CSCD) seem to have jhe. What is the differene between jhe and jhaa? And is the Pali root for the verb 'to meditat'
and 'to burn' the same?

The Sanskrit grammarians classify the root dhyaa as dhyai which phonetically becomes jhe in Pali. They also classify the root k.saa as k.sai which develops to jhe in Pali.

In PED 287, the sanskrit root of dhyaayati is dhii, but what you have is dhyaa. Both roots mean 'to think', but it seems dhyaa is the real root for dhyaayati according to Whitney's book about Sanskrit root. So, is PED wrong in this case?

Yes, PED is wrong, although dhyaa evidently presupposes dhii, of which it is an enlargement. Please refer to Whitne's Roots under dhii.

I forgot to mention that the root of jhaayati to burn is jhaa. The corresponding Sanskrit root is k.saa. In Middle Indic languages k.s becomes jh. This explains the Paali root jhaa and the verb jhaayati. Since Sanskrit dhy becomes jh in Paali, the root jhaa to meditate from Sanskrit dhyaa, and the root jhaa to burn have become indistinguishable.

What is the Pali root of jhaayati which means to burn, not to meditate? PED gives only Sanskrit root.
Is there any reference book by looking into which we can know the root of a Pali verb?
