section with the restrained dog is the virtually the same as is the latter
portion equivalent to evam eva kho, bhikkhave, assutavaa puthujjano . ."
The bit about the diversity of animals is not found in SA. My translation
here is quite literal and unpolished and I have left citta untranslated. I
hope this helps shed more light on the problem.
"Bhik.sus, you should carefully consider and examine citta (=
Tasmaat iha, bhikkhave, abhikkha.na.m saka.m citta.m paccavekkhitabba.m).
Why is that ? Because for a long time citta has been soiled by attachment,
aversion and stupidity (= diigha-rattam ida.m citta.m sa.mkili.t.tha.m
raagena dosena mohena). Bhik.sus, because citta is afflicted, beings are
afflicted, and because citta is purified, beings are purified (=
Cittasa.mkilesaa, bhikkhave, sattaa sa.mkilissanti; cittavodaanaa sattaa
visujjhanti).
"Bhik.sus, I do not see even one ruupa that is not variegated like a
dappled bird (= *Naaham a~n~na.m ekaruupampi samanupassaami ...). Citta is
even more [variegated] that that. Why ? Because the cittas of creatures are
variegated, ruupa is variegated. Therefore, bhik.sus, you should carefully
consider and examine citta. Bhik.sus, for a long time citta has been soiled

"Have you seen a cockerel with its variegated colours (cara.na.m
citta.m) ?"
"Yes Bhagatvat, we have."
"Just as a cockerel with its variegated colours, I say that citta
with its variegations is similar. Why ? The cockerel has its variegated
colours because of variegated citta (= cara.na.m naama citta.m citteneva
cittita.m). Therefore, you should carefully consider and examine citta
which for a long time has been variegated by attachment, aversion and
stupidity. Because citta is afflicted, beings are afflicted, and because
citta is purified, beings are purified. It is like, for example, an artist
or an artist's son who carefully prepares his medium and uses a variety of
colours to paint various images according to his wishes....."
