Perhaps that is the Dhaatuvibhangasutta (M140). This has a novice
'Pukkusaati' who doesn't recognize the Buddha until after their
discussion.
Interestingly, the stories begins very similarly to one of the first
stories in the Dhp-a (Tissa the fat) with the Buddha arriving to
spend a single night in a potter's workshop, and being told there is
another monk who has come first. Luckily they don't get into an
argument, like in the Dhp-a story.
