In the S. IV, many times pe, also la: S IVCh III, 26: parijaanaana. La is
the same as pe ? These must have been used later on, not originally. I
prefer the full text as a reminder for me of the objects impinging on the
six doors.

N: viramati is to abstain, and so is pa.tiviramati. My Pali-Thai dict gives
for pa.ti: specifically, abstains specifically. Pa.ti has many meanings and
this is one of them. You have: pa.ti - prefix against, opposite. Yes, these
are also meanings.
vikaala: vi is negative. kaalo: time.

N: Vinaya, (Horner IV) Mahaavagga, Part III, monks were trampling down crops
and grasses, injuring life etc. The Buddha gave a rule for the rains retreat
(vassaana). The farmers were distressed and irritated if the monks trampled
down the crops etc. No traveling during that season (at least three months
out of the four).
These are Minor rules. Please, I am waiting for others' opinion, maybe more
details.

pa.tivirata - not abstaining from;

Y: kaayaanupassii = kaaya (body) + anupassii (one who contemplates);
N: In these few words there is a lot of meaning. I would like to add a few
things.
The PTS has: So does he, as to the body, continue to consider the body...
viharati: Vibhanga (second book of the Abhidhamma), Ch 12, para 540: dwells:
assumes the four postures, exists, protects, keeps going, maintains, turns
about, dwells...
It is also translated (as PTS suggests) as : continue to do.
anupassii: passati to see, and also: to understand. Anu: can mean: often,
again and again. anupassii: consider, contemplate often, but in this sutta:
with sati sampaja~n~na: with awareness and understanding, this is in
connection with vipassanaa pa~n~naa. Sampajano satima. With understanding
and mindfulness.
Having this in mind I would, instead of: stays focussed prefer: he continues
to contemplate the body... Or lives, dwells contemplating the body. As I see
it, <stays focussed> seems rather to stress only concentration instead of
understanding.
