Dear friends,

the word this week is pe. Frequently in Pali texts a passage is
repeated verbatim or with only one or two words changed. This is
often indicated by giving only the opening words of the passage
followed by the word pe, "and so on", "etc.". It is itself an
abbreviation of the word peyyaala, just like etc. is an abbreviation
of etcetera. (Warder 3e Lesson 16/pg 109) Usually, the word means
to "insert, fill up the gap". It is written as pa in Burmese copies.

It is therefore not surprising that the word is used rarely in
verses, at least it is not found in the Dhammapada.

I have noticed from the Pali edition from metta-net that some
editions may have removed the "…pe…" and replace it with the
relevant text (which, though long-winded, is better for the patient
reader).

Although pe is the fourth highest occurred word in the CSCD, I have
only looked at four sentences this time. There are several places
that I am not certain of, so I look forward for plenty of help from
everyone. Thanks in advance.

(1) DN2 Samannaphala Sutta para.194 (PTS 1.63)
"Biijagaama-bhuutagaama-samaarambhaa pa.tivirato hoti
damaging plants and seeds / not abstaining from / is

…pe… ekabhattiko hoti
…and so on… / having one meal a day / is

rattuuparato *virato vikaala-bhojanaa.
abstaining from food at night / abstains from / food at improper time

*I wonder if there is a typo error in the CSCD, the word I get from
metta-net is pa.tivirato.

biija - seed;
biijagaama - seed-group;
bhuutagaama - plants, vegetation;
samaarambha - injuring, killing, harming, damaging;
biijagaamabhuutagaamasamaarambhaa - can someone please help to
explain this in connection with siila;
pa.ti - prefix against, opposite;
virata - abstaining from, avoiding (viramati p.p.);
pa.tivirata - not abstaining from;
hoti - to be;
ekabhattika - having one meal a day (PED eka);
rattuuparata - abstaining from food at night (PED ratta2);
vikaala - improper time, too late a time;
bhojana - food;
vikaalabhojanaa - food at improper time.

(2) DN4 Sonadanda Sutta para.303 (PTS 1.113)
"Bhava~nhi so.nada.n.do a.d.dho mahaddhano mahaabhogo …pe…

bhava~nhi - ???
so.na - dog;
ada.n.da - without a stick, ie. without force or violence [PED
da.n.da]
so.nada.n.do - ???
a.d.dha - adj. rich, wealthy;
bhoga - possession, wealth;
mahaddhana, mahabhoga - of great wealth, of great resources [PED
a.d.dha2]

(3) DN22 Mahasatipatthana Sutta para.377 (PTS 2.293)
Iti ajjhatta.m vaa …pe… evam pi kho, bhikkhave,
thus / internally / or / …[insert]… / in this way / monks

bhikkhu kaaye kaaya-anupassii viharati.
monk / on body / one who contemplates the body / stays

Thus, monks, in this way, a monk who contemplates the body stays
(focused) on the body internally …[insert]… ...

???iti - is iti an open quotation mark or does it mean thus
evam pi - just so;
kho - indeed;
evam pi kho - in this way;
bhikkhave - voc. monks;
kaaye - loc. body;
kaayaanupassii = kaaya (body) + anupassii (one who contemplates);
viharati - to live, stay.

(4) DN22 Mahasatipatthana Sutta para.379 (PTS 2.295)
"Iti ajjhatta.m vaa … pe … viharati.
thus / internally / or / …[insert]… / stays
"Thus, he stays …[insert]… internally or...


I am not quite sure if there are other usage for the word pe. If
anyone have any idea or example, please don't hesitate to forward it
