Thank you for the above explanation of accusative versus locative for
places.

I was thinking some more about the relationship between tiire and aja-
paala-nigrodhe.

If the two are related then tiire aja-paala-nigrodhe means "on the
Goatherd Banyan tree bank [of the river]" rather than "on the bank
[of the river] at the Goatherd Banyan tree."

But then I would expect the word order to be aja-paala-nigrodhe tiire
if Goatherd Banyan tree is an adjective desribing which bank.

So maybe they are separate after all -- "on the bank [of the river]
at the Goatherd Banyan tree."

Good idea. Unfortunately I don't have access to Peter's translation.
of the commentary. Also I am using public computers so I can't
install Pali fonts, which makes the online texts of the commentaries
( at, e.g., http://www.tipitaka.org ) difficult to read.

I am using the actual printed PTS text in Pali (i.e., *not* the PTS
English translation.) The editor of the text had access to two
manuscripts, I think, plus one manuscript of the commentary that
sometimes included direct quotes from the underlying text. For
posting purposes, though, I sometimes cut and paste from
http://www.tipitaka.org and manually insert characters with
diactrical marks.

I have sometimes referred to the 1902 translation at
http://www.sacred-texts.com/bud/index.htm but this is not the PTS
Woodward translation -- I don't have access to that.

Also I've sometimes looked at the Access to Insight translations of
the preceding suttas (Ud I.1, Ud I.2, Ud I.3) as sometimes they have
material in common with Ud I.4.

Derek.
