Dear Pali friends,

As regard my referencing note below, it is the same system (or similar) as the one
used by Bhikkhu Bodhi (or Nyanamoli) in "The Middle Length Discourses", see for
example at the end of n273:

Pug 1:35-36/15 [Puggala Pa~n~natti, book of Ones, sutta 35-36 / PTS text page 15]

However, through my own experience, I find it more convenient to reverse it:

Pug 15/1.35 [Pug page 15, etc.]

My usage of the period (.) to denote the sutta no. and the colon (:) to denote text
page (following the traditional PTS usage) is also the reverse of Bhikkhu Bodhi's.

I know many more enlightened readers here might regard this as bookish
hair-splitting, but if we want more surprises like the "trilinear text" method, we
need to start working on some agreed or agreeable standards in Pali studies
referencing, at least for the benefit of future students.

I'm sure there are already such workable systems being used in various specialist
academic institutions like the CPD system). So we may have a lot of grounding to work
with and choose a system (like finding some common denominator) that works for us at
least.

People like John Bullitt and Andy have produced some marvellous ideas on this.

I've attached the system I've using over the last decade or so (however, it needs
updating as regards new Pali editions and translations).

Sukhi.
